To achieve my analysis, I will first have to give the reason as to why I am looking at the covers and address my audience as their purpose in this. I want them to be able to look at this will an open mind and to ask questions while they read and be able to refer back to the covers and see exactly what I am seeing. I want the readers to be able to look at covers and be able to agree with me. I want my writing to flow smoothly and be able to be read by a variety of people, from scholars to the everyday man, woman, and child. Everyone should be able to walk away from reading this and be able to understand my writing and see other book covers and be able to look deeper into them and ask the same questions to be able to come up with the same answers. My design will highlight ethos, pathos, and logos, and will cover the aspects from each cover and how they relate to each other and how they do not relate to each other but still convey the same message. Ethos will be the credibility and how the cover gives credibility to the writer and book. I want my design of this paper to give credibility as well. Logos is the logic behind the covers and my design will be able to explain why the color choices, font, drawings, and photos are used logically. Pathos is the emotion, emotion tells a story and covers tell a story and sometimes they only make you ask questions and I want my design to be able to have people ask themselves the same questions that I have about other book covers.

I will analyze four book covers from the novel by Tim O’Brien, The Things They Carried. I want to be able to look at the font choice, the colors, and the images that were chosen and apply them to ethos, logos, and pathos. I want to be able to look at the individual book covers to see if there is a way that a story can be told just through the image. This is the first thing that you look at when you pick up a book. The cover is supposed to tell you a story, or at least the premise of the story and what it is generally about. I want to be able to dig deeper into it and find a way that the colors, fonts, and images grab your attention and get ahold of you. I want to find out how they influence credibility just through those choices. I want to get the sense that they are appealing to some form of emotion and how those choices are made logically. My audience will be everyone that is interested in reading about war, and the associated baggage that comes with war, and not just our most current war but specifically the Vietnam War. Having PTSD myself, I have read this book many times over and can relate to the emotional baggage that comes with serving in war times. I did not receive my PTSD from being in the fight but rather the aftermath and clean up from the fight. I want to analyze, just from the covers, how it portrays a carrying of something, and not just by reading the title, but look farther into it and see what exactly the intention is for the cover. I have read the book but I have never really looked at the cover and analyzed it and this will be my opportunity to analyze it thoroughly.

I am communicating on how to take apart a 1941 Remington Rand M1911, to be able to clean and maintain the pistol properly. I hope to be able to communicate the steps in taking apart the pistol effectively and in the proper order, so that my audience is able to repeat what I have shown, and be able to remember the steps easily. I hope that my audience will feel confident with taking apart the pistol so that they know that there is no fear in damaging the pistol. I want my audience to be able to understand my passion for this pistol and the meaning behind why I am showing them how to do this. This is my passion, guns are my passion, but this pistol is my pride and joy. It was an inheritance piece that I received from when my Grandfather passed away. He wore this pistol every day and kept very good care of it. It was one of his favorites and I intend to keep it in proper working condition and very clean. I can remember him showing me how to take it apart when I was young but I had since forgotten. After I had taken it out to target shoot, I wanted to be able to clean it so I searched for the proper instructions on how to properly take it apart, but to no avail, I could only find pistols that were a close match but were not the exact one. I had to figure it out along with help from instructions of other pistols that are based on this model. I figured it out and now I can take it apart in under 1 minute.
The best possible outcome for this is that my audience walks away confident or is able to follow along with the photos easily. The worst-case scenario is that my audience finds this not helpful at all or they feel that I have done something incorrect. But if they think that it is incorrect then they know how to do it and are just checking to see if it is correct. I feel that this is worthwhile because there are some collectors and gun enthusiasts that do not particularly know how to break down this pistol and from my research on the internet, there is not much out there on how to breakdown this specific pistol.
My audience will be gun enthusiasts, as well as gun collectors, the audience might also be new enthusiasts with their first pistol. They might be frustrated because they have been trying to figure it out on their own. They might be curious on how to do it in the future. They could be hostile because they might be searching for a similar pistol and come across mine and not even know that there are subtle differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. The most relevant to this are the enthusiasts and collectors, this will show them how to break down the pistol in a simple and easy manner.
The communication will take place over the internet, specifically my blog. It will be able to be found via a search engine. I feel that it will mostly be accessed through the home of the viewer. It will be an informal setting but I want it to come off as professional.
Medium: I am utilizing photographs to show the steps in how to properly disassemble and clean a U.S. Army 1941 Remington Rand M1911. I need to show in detail, the step by step process, not just how the parts fit together, but how you go about getting those parts apart, to be able to clean them, as well as putting it back together. I do not think that I will manipulate the pictures, but it is a possibility. I want to be able to show how easy it is to take apart and put back together.
Production: I will utilize PowerPoint at first to see how it will look. But there is a possibility that I will need to put into another format to where it is easily added to my blog.
Ethos: Even though this is a simple task, some may find it daunting. I want people to view this and be at ease with the simplicity of the task at hand. I also want the audience to be able to walk away confident in how to complete this task.
Pathos: I want to be able to show everyone that it is very simple and does not have that many steps in taking the pistol apart. My ethos is for everyone to feel at ease with this task, even if they have never held a pistol. I want this to be presented in a way that invokes simplicity and not complexity, even though the pistol is a complex piece of hardware.
Logos: This will be a step-by-step “How-To” guide. It will be straight and to the point, no frills or gallantry, just simple and easy to understand. The pictures will be set up in a series of steps on what to exactly to do. With the ending picture to just have instructions to be able to reverse the steps to put it back together, but without the actual pictures showing how to put it back together.
Arrangement: The first slide will include everything that you will need to protect the pistol from damaging the surface that the viewer has it laid on, as well as, protecting the pistol from the surface to prevent scratches. The next slide will point out what every component is called. The third slide will show how to take off the pistol grips. The fourth slide will be the first step coupled with the second step, since it entails front portion of the barrel, slide, and slide spring. The fifth slide will show that you need to place the locking pin notch directly over the locking pin and pull the pin out. The sixth slide will indicate that the viewer pulls the slide forward and off the pistol receiver, which houses the spring pin and the barrel. The spring pin will fall out and then the barrel can be pulled out of the front of the slide. The seventh slide will show everything laid out, but in an exploded manner to make sure that all parts are there. The eighth slide will what to cleaning tools and wipes to use where. The ninth slide will show where to shoot some CLP and the final slide will be a picture of the pistol back together.
When I stand back and look at my presentation, I see a product that I envisioned before I started. It came with a few challenges. I knew that my step by step guide would have to be easily understandable and easy to follow. I thought that I would just take maybe 10-12 pictures and it would flow seamlessly, but it did not. When I took my initial set of pictures and set them in the presentation, I started to see the holes in the step-by-step process, I needed to have more detail. I would have to put the pistol back together to a certain step and take a few more pictures. I had to look at it in a sense that the audience was helping in the design and achieving the simplicity of the process. I had to repeat many steps and in total, I probably took apart and reassembled the pistol four to five times.
When it came to the design layout, I knew that I needed to have the pictures laid out in a way that showed major groupings of a step on the same screen, but not so much that it was uneasy to follow the steps. After the initial steps, I found out that when I would present the slide show, the pictures were too small for the steps and just too small to understand. I knew that now I needed to make the pictures bigger. Thus, I had to expand the size of the photos and create more slides. This was much better to view the presentation and understand it. This helped the overall design.

Traditionally, for me, writing has been just that, to satisfy the limitations imposed by a certain assignment that was given to me by a professor. With those limitations, I have been held back in my artistic abilities to be able to design a more effective paper in communicating my arguments with supporting points. With that said, writing should not be as restrictive. I now understand that the ability to communicate effectively requires the ability to design an effective paper or other form of communication to get my point across. Granted, I can write with limitations, and write well, but that does not allow for effective communication to a wider audience. By hampering design in writing and other forms of communication, you limit the imagination of the communicator, therefore, only allowing for a single person audience. Effective written communication takes on a whole new form when the author is allowed to express their artistic side through their writing. The audience becomes broad, not limited, hence the ability to reach the hearts and minds of many, not a singular being. I also understand that the beginnings of communication, I have to be able to come up with a problem before I can provide a solution. If the problem is given before hand, this limitation hampers the artistic ability of an effective communicator.
